What is Smunch?

Saturday morning + brunch = Smunch! That’s what Smunch is: a Saturday morning gathering of brunch-loving people. It’s not an exclusive club of snobbish foodies, just a group of people who like to get together and share a great brunch with new and old friends.

Smunch almost always takes place on the second Saturday of the month at 10:30am. The location changes every time, as part of the fun is sampling the wide variety of brunch which can be found across Phoenix.

Each Smunch is organized via Twitter, so watch for tweets with the #smunch hashtag to find out what’s going on. The only requirements to attend are a love of brunch and a desire to socialize with great people!

The History of Smunch

Smunch started with three people: Matthew, Tracie and Tonia. It all began simply enough. It was just a Twitter conversation on a Saturday morning in March 2009. Matthew and Tracie were in the midst of an hour-long wait to eat at Matt’s Big Breakfast, and being the social media geeks they are, they tweeted about the wait. Their friend and eventual partner in Smunch tweeted back about how breakfast is a meal that gets far too little respect, and how there really should be a breakfast club in Phoenix to find and try restaurants that make amazing breakfast food. Matthew and Tracie agreed and the three promptly did…….absolutely nothing about it.

A few months later, Matthew and Tracie had an idea for a once-a-month weekend tweetup which would be a great excuse to meet up with friends and have a good time. Remembering Tonia’s tweet about having a breakfast club, they thought that brunch and friends would be a good combination. So, all three met up at Sweet Republic one afternoon and collectively created Smunch!

The inaugural Smunch was held in June at Maizie’s and has since visited locations as diverse as Lolo’s Chicken and Waffles and Gallo Blanco Cafe at The Clarendon.
